The Default You Didn't Agree To

Many AI platforms use your conversations to improve their models by default. That means your prompts, your questions, your uploaded documents, and the AI's responses might be fed back into training data.

This matters because:

• Your proprietary business information could influence responses given to other users
• Personal conversations become training material
• Sensitive data enters a pipeline you don't control

How to Check Each Platform

OpenAI (ChatGPT)

By default, conversations on the free tier are used for training. Paid ChatGPT Plus users can opt out through Settings > Data Controls. API usage is not used for training by default.

Anthropic (Claude)

Consumer conversations may be used for training. Enterprise and API usage typically are not. Check your specific plan's terms.

Google (Gemini)

Terms vary by product and plan. Workspace users generally have different terms than consumer users. Check your Google account's data settings.

The Problem with Opt-Out

Even when opt-out exists, the burden is on you to find it and enable it. Most users never do. And terms change: a platform that doesn't train on your data today might change its policy tomorrow.

The Octofy Approach

Octofy does not use your conversations to train AI models. This is not an opt-out setting you need to find. It's the default policy for every user on every plan.

When Octofy sends your prompt to an AI provider for a response, that interaction is governed by the provider's API terms, which generally do not include training on API inputs. Your data is used to generate your response and nothing more.

For Organizations

If your team uses AI for work, data training policies should be part of your evaluation criteria. Ask vendors:

1. Are conversations used for model training?
2. Is the opt-out the default or must users enable it?
3. Has the policy changed in the past 12 months?
4. What happens to data after the conversation ends?

The Simple Rule

If you wouldn't post it publicly, make sure your AI platform doesn't treat it as public. Choose platforms where your data stays yours by default.
